Happy New Year!
The Lunar New Year is upon us, and everyone here at YearoftheHorse.net.au wishes you and your family a Happy New Year!

It’s an exciting time for Lunar Coin collectors! We’ve seen a strong showing from traditional contributors to the Lunar/Numismatic calendar, with the Perth Mint presenting a fine array of perfectly struck Proofs and pure precious metal coins in their always formidable line-up. The Royal Australian Mint has also contributed strongly, as usual, with some traditional-lunar-zodiac-inspired designs and innovative presentations, such as their Frosted Unc 50c.

In a real surprise for collectors (and a very pleasant one at that), The Royal Mint has unveiled for the very first time a range of British legal tender commemoratives celebrating the lunar Zodiac. Difficult to find outside of the UK (except from an Official Royal Mint Distributor), these innovative designs strongly connect traditional Lunar Zodiac themes with key British landmarks. Struck to impeccable Royal Mint standards, these issues mark fine first step for the world’s oldest continuously operating mint.

Despite the fact that the Year of the Horse has only just started, many 2014-dated Year of the Horse coins have already sold out at their respective mints, and are trading strongly on the secondary market. One stellar example was the 2014 $8 Year of the Horse Gold-Plated 5oz Silver Proof, struck by PAMP. It’s strong design, large size and superb Proof strike all contributed to its success – let us know in the comments if you were lucky enough to secure one out of the mintage of just 500!
We hope you have a year full of joy and good fortune, and happy collecting!
